Beyond the Eggs

SPECIAL NEEDS EASTER EGG HUNT

AUTHOR: LYNDY RIZY

The gymnasium buzzed with joy and laughter during our third annual Special Needs Families Easter Egg Hunt. The inviting aromas of freshly popped popcorn and warm chocolate chip cookies greeted families as they arrived. A variety of engaging activities were set up around the gym, offering something for everyone. Attendees could choose from cornhole, face painting, “Egg-Mazing” crafts, jumbo Connect Four, hopscotch, cup stacking, Plinko, and spin-for-a-prize wheels. A prayer table was also available for those seeking time to reflect, alongside the popular Easter egg garden. Our dedicated volunteers were ready and eager to welcome and bless all participating families.

This special egg hunt is designed to be inclusive for individuals with special needs or disabilities of all ages. It’s always a delight to see the beaming faces, like Laura Cahill’s huge smile, and to witness the community spirit, such as Joe Barr and his parents restocking the egg garden.

We’ve taken great care to make the event accessible. The gymnasium floor was easily navigable for those in wheelchairs, and Easter egg baskets were placed at various heights to ensure everyone could comfortably collect eggs. The environment was also mindful of sensory sensitivities; the room was neither too crowded nor too noisy, and lines were short, allowing individuals with sensory issues to enjoy the activities without feeling overwhelmed.

Many families with a member who has special needs or disabilities often find it challenging to participate in typical Easter egg hunts. Our event addresses this need by providing a sensory-friendly and wheelchair-accessible experience with activities that everyone can participate in. More than just a fun outing, this event serves as a powerful message to these families: we see them, and they are loved by Jesus.

Ultimately, this event is more than just entertainment; it’s a demonstration that our church values all people. We sincerely hope every family feels that sense of acceptance and love as they enjoy their time with us.
