DAY 12 - DECEMBER 7TH, 2018

Priests with a Price

Jonathan Anderson

And they sang a new song, saying,
‘Worthy are You to take the book and to break its seals; for You were slain, and purchased for God with Your blood men from every tribe and tongue and people and nation.
You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to our God; and they will reign upon the earth.’
— Revelation 5:9-10

Imagine with me the moment that silenced John’s heavenly vision a few verses prior to Revelation 5:9-10. The moment begins with this question: “Who is worthy to open the book and to break its seals?” (v. 2). John, full of emotion, states that there was no one on earth or in the heavens. But then an elder reveals to John that there is One who is worthy to take the book and to break the seals: Jesus, the Lamb of God. John must have gasped and given a deep sigh of relief, and likely an overwhelming flood of joy took over. May we, too, revel with John and all of heaven in the fact that there is One worthy to accomplish what no one else in heaven or on earth could. The significance of this moment birthed the heavenly song mentioned in verse 9.

Brothers and sisters, this is the best news ever! The gospel is clearly laid out here. Our sin debt was paid, and a new identity was declared over us. Jesus was slain, and by the shedding of His blood, He covered people from every ethnic background, from all locations in the world, for God the Father. This act shows the inclusivity of God’s heart

Furthermore, at this great cost, He has made you and me to be a kingdom of priests, and we will reign in fullness upon the new earth. Plain and simple, this isn’t a commandment; it’s a declaration of what has happened. I, who was once unworthy, have been declared by Him to be worthy to reign in His kingdom of priests. This same identity declaration is given to you. You are a priest in the Kingdom of God now and for all eternity. Our lives are not meant to be spent on our own pursuits; we were bought with a price. You have been given a mission. Your life is not your own.

It’s easy to get sidetracked with all the dealings of our days. Considering this truth and looking forward to Jesus’ return, the declaration that we are priests states the current reality and foreshadows what is to come. Brothers and sisters, there is a coming day when we will, in fullness, rule and reign in His kingdom. This truth should rule our hearts and minds now. It should affect how we live today and how we see tomorrow. It should affect what we say and what we don’t say. This should change everything.

May your heart and mind be overwhelmed with joy that the only One worthy paid the greatest price for you. As we live out the remainder of our time here on earth, may we (priests) be about our Father’s business: telling people of all nationalities that their sin debt is paid and that God’s kingdom is here in part and is soon coming in fullness.

Take a few minutes and ask God to put a new song in your heart and mind that would encourage and edify you and others.

Question to Consider:

Have you accepted the heavenly declaration that you are a priest in God’s Kingdom?
