Bernie Van Roekel
Elder of Personal Prayer Ministry
Bernie is responsible for personal prayer ministry and assisting Pastor Jose Iglesias with ministry work trips to Mexico. He also serves on the prayer ministry team during Jerry Bates’ Sunday morning class.
Bernie is passionate about loving and ministering to people, being available for God’s use as an instrument of His grace in their lives through prayers of faith and practical helps. As a survivor of pancreatic cancer, he has great empathy for those affected by cancer and loves to pray for and minister to them. He enjoys enriching the lives of others while showing them Jesus through the Holy Spirit filled life. Bernie actively seeks the full release of God’s kingdom in his own life and in the lives of those around him.
Bernie was born in Sully, Iowa, and lived on a farm until age five when he moved to Pella, Iowa. He graduated from Iowa State University with a B. S. in Electrical Engineering. Bernie and his wife Mary began dating in high school and married during their last year in college. They lived in Kansas City, Missouri, for nine years where he earned his M. S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Missouri, Columbia. A job brought Bernie and Mary to the DFW area in 1978.
Bernie has worked in the Electrical Engineering field most of his adult life. After taking early retirement from TU Electric in 1992, he started a small computer systems business and later worked for several engineering consulting firms in the DFW areaand for DFW International Airport before retiring.
Bernie has a heart for cross-cultural ministry and serves overseas workers through support and prayer. He has ministered in Honduras as well as making numerous trips to Mexico to minister and help build several small churches. Bernie and Mary have taken a vision trip to Turkey, providing encouragement to workers in that part of the world. In addition, Bernie has been involved in small group leadership for 30+ years. He and Mary have led and hosted several home groups and currently lead a home group at Grace.
Bernie came to Grace in September of 1990 and became an elder in 1993. He enjoys working with computers and the internet, woodworking, restoring antique clocks, reading, and working out at the gym. Bernie and Mary have two daughters, Angela Pomykal, married to Craig with daughters Hannah and Rebekah, and Carol McCoy, married to Bill with sons Caleb and Luke.
