God has instructed us to be generous in the same way that He has been generous to us to the point of giving His only Son's life for us (John 3:16). He has given us all different resources (time, money, talents) and we are simply the managers He has appointed to steward His resources on His behalf (Ps 24:1).

God has specifically asked His people to give financially because He wants us to demonstrate to Him that we love Him not only with our words but also with our actions (Matt 19:21-24). We are to give cheerfully and without compulsion (2 Cor 9:7), and the model that we have from the Old Testament is the tithe which means the tenth or 10%. Some in our church give more than this amount because the New Testament church practiced sacrificial giving (Acts 2:44-46). If you are still in doubt about the blessings of giving to the local church, ask any pastor or elder about their personal stories of how God provided for them in abundance (Luke 6:38) when they were practicing the discipline of the tithe. It is just not possible to out give our generous God.
